The best advice I ever got was: Know the Genre! Seems obvious in a way, but I found it helpful. In my case, the genre in question is Mystery.

So, I learned who was writing what, who was publishing what, what kinds of contests or awards existed (for published and aspiring writers), what organizations existed... and so on. I was also involved with two book clubs.

This was all very helpful as I worked on my manuscript.

I got a book contract realtively quickly - within four months (and 20 query letters).

Now, I just have to wait a few more weeks and I'll see my first novel in a bookstore somewhere and that will be so cool & so exciting!

    Cheers, Jill

Interesting...I'll have to think about this. I've had SOOO much advice it's hard to pick just one thing, but I'd definitely be interested in contributing :D

Tara and MaryBeth -- I let my editor know you're interested, but I also replied to your emails.

For anyone else, you can go directly to fuelyourwriting.com and at the top right, there's a 'contact' box that drops down and asks for basic information. You should hear something back soon after submitting your info! =)
